Like most cultures, the Lakota culture is centered around their religious beliefs in the Wakan Tanka, or Great Spirit, and the cyclical flow of life. I wanted to take this episode to highlight all the key parts of the Lakota religious foundations and retell the Lakota origin story. The Lakota religion has gone through many changes in the last century, but many fragments of their noble religion still exist today, such as pow-wows. It is essential to preserve, retell, and spread the truth about the indigenous people of America, and to sharing their religious beliefs is a very important aspect of this preservation. Thank you for joining me and I hope you return to listen to other episodes. Click the links above to listen and donate if you can! In this episode, we'll delve into the Lakota religion and spiritual beliefs highlighting the evolvement from it's origin to the present day. We'll explore, in detail, the 7 sacred rites of the Lakota people, some of their foundational beliefs and the structure/practice of their religion. Join me through this journey through time in the first episode of the second season of the Black Hills Historical Podcast. If you have any friends, family, etc. who you think would enjoy this podcast, PLEASE SHARE it to them! Linktree- All Other Links To Listen EPISODE DESCRIPTION In this episode we will embark on an exploration of Lakota reservations, delving into their history, how they have evolved and the issues that they face. We'll learn about the modern landscape of reservations, including substance abuse, casinos, and economic struggles. Reservations have a complex history but they are an important part of the American landscape and First Nations peoples. Pine Ridge Interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYU6epXyxhg The Red Road: https://theredroad.org/ Hi listeners, thank you for listening to this episode! I hope to make more episodes in the near future! The reservation system was meant to have lands accommodating the original land and lifestyle of First Nations people, but that has not been fulfilled throughout history. Reservations include a painful history of broken promises, stolen lands, and limited help. The Lakota people inhabit 6 reservations in South Dakota, and they struggle with many issues including substance abuse, poverty, and economic issues. Sharing and listening to this podcast and not allowing those stories to be forgotten is a very good way for you to help! Sincerely, Josh Martinez Host Of The Black Hills Historical Podcast EPISODE DESCRIPTION In this episode, we'll embark on a journey to uncover the rich history of one of the 7 Lakota spiritual traditions – the Sun Dance. As we step into the realm of the Sun Dance, we'll discover the intricate rituals, symbolic regalia, and the deep connection with Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit. Fasting and dancing under the sun's gaze, participants seek spiritual renewal, unity, and guidance from the spirits that have guided their ancestors for generations. Join us as we delve into the sacred rhythms of this ancient ceremony and exploring its significance and enduring legacy within Lakota culture. Hi listeners, thank you for listening to this episode! I hope to make more episodes in the near future! The Sun Dance was an amazing part of Lakota history and tradition and it is a shame that it cannot be practiced, exactly to tradition, now. The Lakota people had a deep connection with the Wakan Tanka, the Earth and their ancestors, which made the Sun Dance extremely significant. I think that the Sun Dance was a testament to the virtually unbreakable spirit of the Lakota people- and many other First Nations Tribes. Unfortunately, much of the traditions and history of the First Nation's people are being lost to globalization and the cultural removal endured by the Lakota in the early 20th century. But not all hope is lost! Sharing and listening to this podcast and enabling this history to be shared and those stories to be forgotten is a very good way for you to help! If you have any friends, family, etc. who you think would enjoy this podcast, PLEASE SHARE it to them! Comment Below What You Thought Of The Episode! In this episode, I discuss the ethnocide experienced by the Lakota, and other indigenous Americans, during the "Kill The Indian, Save The Man" movement of the late 19th- early 20th centuries. I also take a closer look at the creation of boarding schools and assimilation programs and how those operated and how they adversely impacted the Indigenous Americans.Hi listeners, thank you for listening to this episode! It's been over 1 1/2 years since I've made an episode for this podcast, but I hope to make more in the near future! The issues discussed in this podcast are important and must not be forgotten. These ethnocide programs were ethically wrong and the events that went on at many of these programs were terrible to the future of the Lakota culture. While this issue affected more Indigenous Americans then just the Lakota, so it is important to understand the broader scope of this issue. While "Kill The Indian, Save The Man" was not a success, many of these nations and their cultures still need help! And sharing and listening to this podcast and not allowing those stories to be forgotten is a very good way for you to help! If you have any friends, family, etc. who you think would enjoy this podcast, PLEASE SHARE it to them!
